Rocky Hill High School Summer Reading 2009
The RHHS has created a Summer Reading Program to encourage the enriching and enjoyable lifelong habit of reading for pleasure and learning. This year’s new program, developed by students, parents, teachers and administrators, allows students to select books of interest and win prizes for their participation.
Students select a minimum of two books to read over the summer. A list of suggested authors has been compiled by the Cora J. Belden Library librarians, RHHS faculty and students. Students may use this information as a guide when choosing their books.
When students return to school on August 31, 2009, they must bring the completed participation form with their signatures and their parent’s signature verifying the titles of books that they have read.
Students should also be prepared to discuss their books with classmates and teachers/advisors in homeroom during the first week of school. Students may share their thoughts about the books in a variety of ways. Some examples include: writing a poem, composing a song/rap, explaining a significant quote from the book, designing a poster, creating thought-provoking questions and written responses, presenting an oral summary, bringing an artifact or drawing a picture. Creative responses are encouraged! Homeroom teachers will maintain a record of student responses, although they will not be graded.
All students who return a signed form and participate in the Summer Reading discussion will earn raffle tickets for a drawing to be held at a school assembly in late September. Recognition will also be provided for top participating students, homerooms and class. The more students read, the better their chances to earn recognition!
